On demand: Elgar's Cockaigne

KonserthusetPlayRecorded at Konserthuset Stockholm: Stora Salen, Stockholm, Sweden

Watch the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra perform Sir Edward Elgar's lively and colourful concert overture Cockaigne, a musical portrait of the city of London at the beginning of the 20th century. The orchestra plays under the leadership of its Chief Conductor and Artistic Adviser Sakari Oramo. Recording from 20 & 21 November 2013.

In the winter of 1900/1901, Elgar began to sketch material intended to be his first symphony, but which he instead turned into shorter pieces, including the first Pomp and Circumstance marches and the Cockaigne concert overture . The overture is an easy-going and vividly drawn portrait of turn-of-the-century London.

Elgar’s Cockaigne alternates between majestic and poetic. We also hear timbral traces of Richard Wagner sweep across Elgar’s musical portrait of London, which is also compared to the overture to the Master Singers.

Filmed in November 2013.
