What would you sacrifice in return for eternal youth?

Dr Faust is tired of life when the devil, Méphistophélès, offers him eternal youth and pleasures of the flesh in return for selling his soul. Faust is enchanted by a vision of Marguerite and the agreement is soon sealed.

The libretto, based on Goethe’s classic story, provides brilliant scope for the soloists. A true ‘grand opéra’, Faust is a work of flowing melody and powerful sentiment yet also refinement. Its best-known arias include Marguerite’s Jewel Song, and Méphistophélès’ Golden Calf and Satanic Serenade. The finale, about damnation and redemption, is one of the most impressive in operatic literature.

Faust returns to the Savonlinna repertoire after a long interval, in a revised version. A psychologically astute reading can be expected from Stage Director Vilppu Kiljunen, backed by a cast of top Finnish and internationally-established soloists.

Sung in French with Finnish and English surtitles.

Duration about 3 hours and 30 minutes. One interval
