Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the Hallé Orchestra and Barbirolli Chair of Conducting at the Academy, returns to conduct Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony following the highly acclaimed performance of the composer’s Fifth at the Academy in December 2016. Written in 1943 in the ‘tragic’ key of C minor, many critics argue that the optimism of the work’s conclusion sets it apart from previous symphonies in that key by such composers as Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler.

Tickets: £7.50 (concessions £5.50) from the Academy’s Box Office
