On demand: Henrik Hellstenius' As if the law is everything

Bergen Philharmonic OrchestraRecorded at Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Norway
Programme
Hellstenius, Henrik (b. 1963)As if the law is everything, song cycle

Watch the world premiere of Norwegian composer Henrik HellsteniusAs if the law is everything, performed by soprano Tora Augestad and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Edward Gardner.

In this seven-part song cycle, Hellstenius has put words by Norwegian poet Øyvind Rimbereid to music. The main theme is a reflection on what is law, how it fits into our life in all its forms: the laws of the natural world, that govern all that we see and can imagine, but also the law of the tribunal, represented by the portrait of three women - all involved with criminal law in different ways. They are a thief, a judge and a murder victim - and all roles are sung by the mezzo-soprano. But the first human law, according to this piece, is a very human promise to be present for each other.

Filmed in November 2017.
