Back by popular demand is Ode to the Master, our sensational 2017 programme paying tribute to master choreographer Hans van Manen on the occasion of his 85th birthday.

HANS VAN MANEN

Though his reputation as one of the world’s master choreographers is long-established, Van Manen lately seems to be enjoying a second international breakthrough, with premier companies like the Marijinski Ballet, Bolsjoi Ballet and Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris recently adding his works to their repertoire. With this living legend as its resident choreographer, Dutch National Ballet is fortunate to be the leading stage for Van Manen’s work. In Ode to the Master, audiences are treated to four masterpieces from his oeuvre.

ODE TO THE MASTERON THE MOVE

‘breathtaking’
On the Move is a new Van Manen added to our repertoire last year. Described in the press as ‘a breathtaking experience’, Van Manen’s choreography embodies the many rhythmic variations of Prokofiev’s First violin concerto with astonishingly apparent ease; every line, glance, transition and musical phrase feels inevitable.

SYMPHONIEËN DER NEDERLANDEN

bold and sexy
Van Manen created Symphonieën der Nederlanden to kick off Amsterdam’s year as the European Capital of Culture Capital in 1987. The work is set to Louis Andriessen’s music of the same name; a rousing composition evoking images of American marching bands to which Van Manen gave a fresh personal twist in a choreography that is self-assured, bold and sexy.

SARCASM

a lovers’ dialogue
Unrivalled in Van Manen’s famed ‘ballets for two’ series is the iconic Sarcasm, an ironic tug-of-war – with a pianist adding a third protagonist to the mix – in which the dancers push each other to the extreme in an intimate dialogue about love.

5 TANGOS

music by Astor Piazzolla
The sensational capstone to Ode to the Master is 5 Tangos, perhaps the most widely performed of all of Van Manen’s creations. With this work, Van Manen introduced the Netherlands to Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo in 1977. Set to a sequence of five distinctive compositions, the choreography is a sultry duet between the veiled passion of the tango and the cool remove of ballet.
