On demand: Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”

Bergen Philharmonic OrchestraRecorded at Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Norway

Edward Gardner conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in Dvořák’s masterpiece Symphony No. 9 "From the New World".

Antonín Dvořák wrote his last symphony in New York, where he had moved to run the city’s new music academy. In this piece he wove the spirituals and plantation songs of America into music of intense warmth, drama and spontaneity. Nature shines through this most popular of Dvořák’s symphonies, but so does the sense of sadness and longing that the composer felt, far away from his Czech homeland.
