Mahler himself called his Fifth Symphony a “foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound.” It begins simply enough, with a lone trumpet fanfare, but quickly explodes into one of music’s most passionate, thrilling symphonies. The Adagietto is probably the single most famous piece by Mahler--Leonard Bernstein played it at JFK’s funeral and it is liberally used as the soundtrack for the film “Death in Venice.”
