Gothenburg Concert Hall: Stora SalenGötaplatsen, Gothenburg, Västra Götaland, Sweden
November 06, 07 at 19:30

Magical songs ranging from the deeply gripping to the hilarious humor with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and soloists Katarina Karnéus and Hanno Müller-Brachmann. Conductor: Johannes Gustavsson.

Gustav Mahler discovered a collection of folk poems entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The texts inspired several of his most important works, such as the song collection A Wayfarer's Songs, episodes in the first four symphonies and, not least, these magical songs that range from the deeply gripping to the hilarious humor.

Des Knaben Wunderhorn is also not a song cycle in the ordinary sense, but each song stands for itself, strong and with its own unique musical design. Initially, the songs were written with piano accompaniment, but Mahler's own instrumentation reinforces each song's emotional center.

At this concert we will also hear Anders Eliasson's fiercely intense and emotionally strong fourth symphony.
