‘Do good wherever you can; love freedom above all else; and never deny the truth, even if you are sitting on a throne!’ This album entry by Beethoven, dating from 1793, perfectly fits the personality of the Turkish pianist and composer Fazıl Say. Not only is he a leading musician and ‘does good’, he currently stands in the spotlight for his ‘enlightened’ attitude toward Islamism. In his guest performance with the Camerata Salzburg, he will take both the solo part and the con- ductor’s role in Beethoven’s dramatic Third Piano Concerto. Mozart wrote his ‘Serenata notturna’ for Salzburg’s Carnival festivities in 1776, while Arnold Schoenberg’s ‘Transfigured Night’ sets a steamy erotic poem by Richard Dehmel to music of utmost expressivity. Although it caused a scandal at its 1902 première, ‘Transfigured Night’ now numbers among Schoenberg’s most popular works. Originally it was composed for string sextet, but Schoenberg produced two versions of this tone-poem for string orchestra – a clear indication of the deep personal significance he felt for it.
