Every farewell is difficult – in the last symphony that Gustav Mahler completed, this banal saying turns into a deeply moving musical experience. How much silence and deceleration can someone bear? Mahler takes an unbelievably long time over the main subject of the last movement, expanding it further and further until he finally lets it die away in infinite slowness. It's going to be interesting to hear how Teodor Currentzis and his SWR Symphonieorchester interpret the work: their reading will certainly be unconventional, as the Greek conductor has a reputation to defend.
