Shakespeare’s tragic tale of love, jealousy and betrayal are all vividly realised in Dvořák’s dramatic overture, while Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto brings soaring lyricism, ear-catching instrumental colours and a slow movement of guileless serenity. By contrast, supercharged fanfares launch the towering structure that is Tchaikovsky’s angst-ridden Fourth Symphony. Between its famous opening fate motif and triumphant close, there’s no shortage of memorable tunes or imaginative scoring, heard to brilliant effect in the plucked strings of the effervescent third movement.
