Can a sacrifice inspired by love be liberating?

A passionate and tragic tale, typical of the great Italian romantic operas, about the singer Tosca, the painter Cavaradossi and the police chief Baron Scarpi, which has thrilled audiences across the world for more than 100 years.

Tosca – a famous singer, but also a woman and a lover, who in the space of a single night loses everything.  Can a sacrifice inspired by love be liberating? If the meaning of life is love, can we live without it? These are the questions put forward by this new production of the opera at the Janáček Theatre. The production has been inspired by Maria Callas, who is still considered to be one of the most impressive performers of this role. She too was a wife and a lover, she too gave up everything for her art, only to renounce art in the end because of her unfulfilled love. Two fates that merge in one moment…

Performed in the original Italian with Czech and English subtitles.
