A longing to love

Kari Heiskanen’s critically-acclaimed direction of Aulis Sallinen’s Kullervo makes a well-deserved return to the repertoire in Finland’s centenary year. Brilliantly interpreting the gloomy title role is baritone Ville Rusanen, who made an indelible impression as Kimmo, Kullervo’s childhood friend, in 2014.

Love may be a possibility in the world of a man cursed from birth and with a thirst for revenge, but can he see even a chink of light? Sallinen admirably captures the young Kullervo’s defiant, unpredictable bluster. The opera even has an almost “light” musical interlude.

Sung in Finnish with Finnish and English surtitles.

Duration approx 3 hours with 1 interval.
