Hear two great works that emerged from the horrors of war. Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No.2 was composed in the aftermath of the Siege of Leningrad, during which a million citizens were killed. Messiaen wrote his Quartet for the End of Time in a prisoner of war camp, and performed it there with three fellow detainees to an audience of prisoners and their guards.
