As its title suggests, a key element of this ludicrous early Rossini opera is a silken ladder. Night after night, it enables Giulia to give the man to whom she is secretly married access to her room. Her guardian is completely unaware of this and plans to marry Giulia to another man. The fact that three men use the silken ladder in the finale is just one of the unpleasant complications of this racy comedy.

Director Damiano Michieletto presents the piece, with its cast of six, as a modern sitcom, devoting himself entirely to Rossini’s motto that the everyday must be exaggerated if it is to become an opera. With conductor Ottavio Dantone at the rostrum, who has already impressed Zurich audiences with Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito and Vivaldi’s La verità in cimento, we can look forward to an interpretation that is guaranteed to be lively. Moreover, this revival will feature a select Rossini ensemble consisting of Sen Guo, Edgardo Rocha, Elliot Madore and Carlo Lepore, all of whom are experts in fast-paced, well-oiled coloratura.
