Puccini’s Tosca has topped the list of the most frequently performed operas since its premiere in 1900. The tragic fates of the female lead Tosca and her lover Cavaradossis are told through music that is just as dramatically brutal as it is gleamingly beautiful. The plot takes place in Rome over the course of a single day; 17 June 1800. It plays out against the background of real-life events staged by the cruel chief of police Scarpia. Several of the opera’s arias and duets are among the art form’s most beloved.

Director Knut Hendriksen has created a beautiful period performance whose scenery is based on where the actual events occurred in Rome. Tosca, perhaps the opera world’s greatest tragedienne, is played by celebrated dramatic soprano Emma Vetter.
