Swedish choreographer Johan Inger's  full-length work Carmen had its world premiere in Madrid in spring 2015, which attracted rave reviews and in autumn 2016 it won the ‘Benois de la Danse’, which can be compared to an Oscar in the dance world. Now we have the opportunity to experience this masterpiece, as Spain’s national company (Compañía nacional de danza) makes a guest appearance here at the Göteborg Opera.

Johan Inger created the title role for the Icelandic dancer Emilia GisladÓttIr – then a member of the Spanish company but now a dancer in GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.

Carmen is a dramatic tale of jealousy which unyieldingly transforms from potent erotic attraction to the brutality of the irreconcilable conclusion. The independent Carmen is as fiery as passion itself. When her infatuation with Don José cools, she moves quickly on to the arms of another. Something he cannot accept. In his timeless Carmen, Johan Inger focuses on the violence of the story, but approaches it from the perspective of an innocent child.

The music is an amalgamation of Bizet's opera, Shchedrin’s ballet and newly commissioned music by Marc Álvarez.

Johan Inger is the in-house choreographer at the Nederlands Dans Theater based in The Hague. In 2011, he created Falter for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.
