Glière was already an established composer at the time of the 1917 revolution, with deep roots in the Russian Romantic tradition. His outstanding use of orchestral colour and expressive melody are shown to great effect in music to one of the first Soviet ballets The Red Poppy, and in the late concerto imaginatively scored for wordless soprano voice. First though, Mosolov’s extraordinary The Iron Foundry – a hymn to the power and excitement of a new industrial age – and Prokofiev's best-known piano concerto, popular for its highly effective blend of dynamic pianism and swooning melodies.
