A concert focusing on the French impressionists interpreted by the orchestras own soloists.

The last chamber concert of the season takes place in Troldsalen at Troldhaugen, and we are ready for a French spring concert with the impressionists Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. In many ways the harp plays a key role this evening. Johannes Wik performs Debussy’s Dance Sacrée and Dance profane, composed in 1904 for the Pleyel instrument makers to promote their new chromatic harp.

At that time Debussy had just completed his opera Pelleas & Melisande, and he was working on La Mer. The year after, as a response to this, the producer of the conventional pedal-harp, Erard, asked Ravel to write a piece which could demonstrate this instrument’s full potential. The result was Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings, a concerto for harp in mini-format.

Solo clarinetist Christian Stene performs Debussys Rhapsody for Clarinet, a piece distinguished by clarity, elegance and beautiful nuances. As Debussy himself later commented: ‘’For a Frenchman, finesse and nuance are the daughters of intelligence’.
