When Richard Strauss chose Oscar Wilde's “scandalous” play Salome as the subject for his third musical drama, contemporary audiences were astonished that someone would be bold enough to depict the story of John the Baptist and Salome as an erotic and bloody fantasy on the opera stage. Nevertheless, the work proved a tremendous success even at its 1905 Dresden world premiere; Gustav Mahler referred to the piece shortly afterwards as “one of the most important works of our time”.
Ferenc Anger's new production will first be presented in the summer of 2018, on the Margaret Island Open-Air Stage. Appearing for the first time in her career in the title role, which poses some of the greatest vocal and dramatic challenges in the operatic repertoire, will be Andrea Rost.
