Music arranged by Mozart and Beethoven

A series of three concerts in which period-instrument group, Ensemble DeNOTE explore celebrated chamber music by Mozart and Beethoven in unfamiliar arrangements made by the composers themselves, their pupils and contemporaries. Each concert is introduced by a pre-concert event led by Professor John Irving, Mozart specialist, fortepianist and founder of Ensemble DeNOTE.

We conclude our survey of arrangements by exploring arrangement as commentary, including one of Mozart's early piano concertos (in homage to J.C. Bach) and his reimagining of three fugues from J.S. Bach's Das Wohltemperirte Clavier. As Mozart looked back on the Bach family, so Beethoven did on Mozart himself, as we discover in two of his variation sets on famous Mozart arias. Beethoven’s own Piano Trio arrangement of his Second Symphony brings our journey to its close.

Pre-concert event at 2.15pm: John Irving and violinist-composer, Marcus Barcham-Stevens discuss historic chamber-music arrangements and their potential to inspire modern composers.
