We always enjoy performing chamber music together, as it gives our musicians the opportunity to present themselves individually in chamber works, far away from the large orchestral repertoire. This concert features an enchanting blend of wind and string instruments with some surprising pieces and whimsical jester-like interludes – after all, music should be fun. Richard Strauss saw it the same way when he once winkingly remarked: »I just wanted people in the concert hall to laugh properly«. He was referring to his wonderful piece about the mischievous Till Eulenspiegel, which we now get to play in a slightly different version: In 1954, Franz Hasenöhrl created a light-hearted grotesque in chamber music form from the famous symphonic poem – joketales in several episodes for only five instruments. The joy of playing was also the guiding principle of Harald Genzmer’s work, and his quartet from 1967 is an impressive work full of experiments and vitality. Franz Berwald’s Septet, completed in 1828, is equally distinctive and remarkable for its musical texture – and we can enjoy our virtuoso playing to the hilt in bold rollercoaster rides. We also present the cheerful »Serenata in vano« from 1914, a serenade in vain. Carl Nielsen even provided us with instructions: »First, the gentlemen play in a somewhat chivalrous and ostentatious manner to lure the beauty onto the balcony, but she doesn’t appear. After that, they try with somewhat more solemn sounds, also to no avail. So, after playing in vain, they have had enough and shuffle home to the sounds of a little march, playing it for their own amusement.«
