The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra begins this distinctive program with an orchestral rendering drawn from Thomas Adès’s acclaimed opera The Exterminating Angel, based on Luis Buñuel’s surreal 1962 classic. Debussy’s La mer delights with its shimmering colors and dreamy harmonies, and Elgar’s melancholic Cello Concerto—written after the tragedy of the First World War—highlights the musicality of prodigiously talented cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason.
