Daniel Barenboim, Michael Barenboim and Kian Soltani present the first of two concerts charting Beethoven’s exquisite trios for piano, violin and cello.

As the world celebrates 250 years since Beethoven’s birth, we welcome musicians of huge international stature to Royal Festival Hall to journey through the composer’s trios for violin, cello and piano – starting with the composer’s Opus 1.

Beethoven’s publisher was inundated with orders when his first three piano trios appeared. Amateur musicians wanted to try their hands at the pieces by the eccentric German new to Vienna; when they opened the score, they quickly realized they were out of their depth.

Beethoven raised the piano trio out of the domain of salon hobbyists and onto the professional stage. His first trio liberated the cello and violin, and invested the piano with a thrusting virtuosity and power. Meticulous, rebellious and transformative, the work made Beethoven’s name overnight.

13 years later, Beethoven returned to the piano trio and brought even more dramatic power to bear. His trio Op.70 No.1 bursts with harmonic and expressive freedom. Its slow movement was deemed so haunting that the score attracted the nickname ‘Ghost’.
