Video on demand: Knut Vaage's Futurasjon

Bergen Philharmonic OrchestraRecorded at Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Norway

Futurasjon was part of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra’s commissioning programme OPUS 250: new works by Norwegian and foreign composers were commissioned by the orchestra as a part of their 250 years celebration. This is a video of the world-premiere of Futurasjon, by Norwegian composer Knut Vaage, in a performance conducted by Edward Gardner.

Vaage says, about his new work: “The Symphony Orchestra is in itself a complete unit which through history has changed itself sonically by introducing new instruments and new ways of playing. With Futurasjon – a word I have invented – I wanted to introduce yet another extension. In short, it focuses on giving the sound from each instrument a new dimension through electronics, a soundscape which the musicians and the audience hopefully will experience as useful.”

Futurasjon is a playful, imaginative work around the question on how the orchestral sound might sound like in the future, in an effort to communicate with our own time. Vaage points to the fact that electronic technology is to be found everywhere in our society, also in the world of music.

Filmed in December 2015.
