La Gioconda is a grand opera of passion, betrayal, and sacrifice, set in 17th-century Venice. The story centres on Gioconda, a blind fortune-teller’s daughter, who is in love with Enzo Grimaldo. Enzo, however, is infatuated with Laura Adorno, the wife of the corrupt Alvise Badoero. The opera unfolds with intense emotional and vocal demands, featuring the renowned aria “Suicidio” and the famous “Dance of the Hours.”
Liceu Opera House presents a new production co-produced with Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. Directed by Romain Gilbert, the production features Saioa Hernández and Ekaterina Semenchuk alternating in the title role. The cast also includes Michael Fabiano, Martin Muehle, and Elina Garanča. The staging, designed by Etienne Pluss with costumes by Christian Lacroix, evokes a mysterious and melancholic Venice. The Symphony Orchestra of The Liceu Opera House is conducted by Daniel Oren.
