You’re in for a real treat, because we’re setting off four musical fireworks. Our energy will also be fuelled by two Spanish artists – conductor Roberto González-Monjas and pianist Javier Perianes. The concert begins with a humorous role play: Manuel de Falla’s ballet »El sombrero de tres picos« (»The Three-Cornered Hat«) from 1919 is set in a small Andalusian town – and we get to use funny onomatopoeia and lively dances to bring this bustling comedy of mistaken identities to life. Equally atmospheric is his piece »Nights in Spanish Gardens«, completed in 1916: enchanting impressions for piano and orchestra, with which the composer wanted to »evoke places, moods and feelings«. This also chimes with Debussy, who loved to listen to the wind for his music, »which tells us the history of the world« – and who even wanted to be a sailor at first.
With »La mer« in 1905, he created a spherical, shimmering masterpiece: it juggles key motifs that spin endlessly like the glittering play of ocean waves, while in between we imitate the whistling wind or a screeching seagull. The concluding »Boléro« is also a treat – its creation apparently has something to do with Ravel’s passion for collecting mechanical toys: this stroke of genius reflects his childlike joy, coupled with the precision of a craftsman. This orchestral experiment gradually draws the audience into a hypnotic, ever-louder and more powerful vortex, driven by the spell of the automaton-like, unchanging rhythm of the drum.
