A holiday classic with a twist! If you love Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker suite then get ready for the Beatlecracker suite, which implants popular tunes from The Beatles into the Nutcracker suite. Harrison Yang Meng then performs Walton’s Concerto for viola and orchestra. This concerto was originally composed for violist Lionel Tertis; wary of the modernity of the composition, Tertis rejected it only to regret this decision later in life. Ultimately, the piece was premiered with renowned composer Paul Hindemith playing the viola part. It is cast in three movement, with the third movement featuring elements of cyclic form by developing motifs from the first. An early work, Dukas’ Symphony in C is in three movement rather than the typical four and uses melodic and harmonic techniques that anticipate his popular tone poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice five years later.
