In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. He led humorous musical theatre into its true paradise. Just as the tragedian Verdi took his leave of the world with a humorous piece, this equal master of the humorous bade farewell to the world with a serious opera. However consummate we may find “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, we must be aware that work on the score was not completed, and that Offenbach certainly had a great deal in mind that he was unable to realise. We are thus close to many a secret when we hear “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”.
Hans Weigel.
