Festival: West Green House Opera

Biography

July 20th - 29th 2018

A hidden gem nestled in the Hampshire countryside but barely 40 miles from London, West Green House Opera ‘punches well above its weight in terms of style’ according to music critic Michael White who describes it as ‘my favourite country opera venue’. Accommodating just 400 people in specially designed undercover theatres with perfect sightlines and very comfortable seats, audiences at West Green are treated to brand new fully staged opera productions featuring entirely professional casts with emerging artists performing alongside established talents. The 2018 Season sees a new production of Bernstein’s Candide, directed and designed  by Mid Wales Opera Artistic Director Richard Studer and conducted by Jonathan Lyness. The same creative team will stage the first Madama Butterfly ever performed in West Green’s twenty-year history, starring Katie Bird in the title role. Those relishing an operatic rarity will enjoy Offenbach's ‘Bataclan’ conducted by James Sherlock and performed in a biting new libretto by its director Morag Joss, celebrated for her psychological thriller writing and now applauded as an opera director. Beyond the opera stage, audiences can wander around the stunning Gardens at West Green, book pretty Raj Tents in the Lakefield for their picnics or enjoy fine dining from Vanilla Catering. The Lakefield Cocktail Bar is a regular attraction and as dusk falls, the Gardens are lit with theatrical effect, creating an extra performance to be savoured with nightcap in hand. Daytime events include Midday Music for all the family and lunch with celebrated raconteur Gyles Brandreth while jazz lovers will revel in ‘Marvellous Party!”, two concerts designed exclusively for West Green celebrating the music of Cole Porter and Noel Coward. Cherished by those who know it for its friendly atmosphere, West Green welcomes first time opera goers alongside seasoned enthusiasts for one of the loveliest events of the summer season.

Booking is now open for the 2018 Season, online at westgreenhouseopera.co.uk or by phone 01252 848676
