June 24 – July 31, 2018

With the Munich Opera Festival, the Bayerische Staatsoper has organized the annual highlight of Munich’s cultural summers since 1875. It is therefore one of the oldest festivals of its kind. It began under General Director Karl von Perfall, who held office from 1867 to 1893, and organized a festival summer for the first time in 1875 with operas by Mozart and musical dramas by Wagner.

With time the festival idea also encompassed an own festival theater, and so under General Director Ernst von Possart the Prinzregententheater emerged within a year at the turn of the century, emboldened by the wishes of the people and supported by Prince Regent Luitpold. The opening on August 21, 1901 with the Meistersinger conducted by Hermann Zumpe was a true festival of the people and introduced a golden age of the Munich Opera Festival. Today visitors can enjoy a diversified repertoire of operas over five weeks. From the end of June to July 31, operas, ballets, concerts and enthralling music theater projects are presented in more than 70 events.Along with two festival premieres, the current new productions of the respective season can also be enjoyed on the Staatsoper’s stage.

The 2018 Festival will bring a new production of Richard Wagner’ s Parsifal under the baton of Kirill Petrenko and Jonas Kaufmann in the lead. Orlando Paladino will be the second new production, bringing this rarely performed opera by Joseph Haydn to the intimate stage of the Prinzregententheater. Another highlight will be a complete Ring-cycle conducted by Kirill Petrenko.
