Festival: Barokkfest

Biography

Jan 28th – Feb 1st 2019

World class baroque in Norway’s magical city of Trondheim!

As Norway lies steeped in the Arctic night, the medieval city of Trondheim comes to life with the crème de la crème of today’s international baroque scene. World-class performers such as Jordi Savall, Christophe Rousset, Hervé Niquet, Andrew Parrott or orchestras and ensembles such as L’Arpeggiata, Le Poème harmonique or The Hilliard Ensemble have become close friends of the festival. Leading instrumentalists, such as Rachel Podger, Enrico Onofri and Rolf Lislevand feature in the festival, not to mention some of the most sought after voices of our time, such as Karina Gauvin, Ian Bostridge, Emma Kirkby, Ann Hallenberg or Sonia Prina.

Organised around the Nidaros Cathedral, the world’s northernmost gothic cathedral, the festival highlights Trondheim’s unique historical background as a centre of learning older than Britain’s Oxford, and a political seat that ruled over the entire North Atlantic. The medieval buildings still stand out as some of the most astonishing examples of medieval architecture in Northern Europe. The city flourished in the eighteenth century, with treasures such as one of the best preserved historical organs from Bach’s time. Trondheim is a beautiful destination, fast becoming Norway’s leading culinary capital with world-class restaurants and magnificent historical hotels.

Barokkfest takes particular pride in presenting original opera productions with carefully selected conductors and stage directors among the most significant names of today’s scene. Previous productions include Pygmalion with Christophe Rousset, Rameau's works with Hervé Niquet, Montverdi’s Orfeo with Robert Hollingsworth and Thomas Guthrie or Händel’s Il trionfo del tempo with Paul Agnew. The festival has ventured into the repertoire of opéra-comique with a highly acclaimed production of Barbe Bleue in an enchanting version by stage directors Julien Lubek and Cécile Roussat. Barokkfest offers a unique combination of first class musical productions and exotic historical experience. Trondheim airport enjoys direct flights from a number of major European cities including Amsterdam, London, Copenhagen and Stockholm.
