June 28 - August 10 2019

Every summer since 1957, opera lovers have come from all over the world to enjoy Santa Fe Opera, one of America’s premier summer festivals. A wide-ranging repertory of new, rarely performed, and standard works is presented in a dramatic theater with stunning views of the surrounding northern New Mexico mountains. The fusion of art and nature leaves an enduring impression on all who come.

Many opera fans arrive early for tailgate parties in the parking lot, the preview buffet dinner on the opera’s magnificent grounds, which includes an informative talk about the evening’s performance, or the prelude talks in Stieren Orchestra Hall, which offer a lively introduction to the evening’s opera and are free to ticket holders.

The company was founded by the late John Crosby, a young conductor from New York, who envisioned a summer festival that would give singers an alternative to European opera houses, taking his inspiration not from the traditional world of opera, but from the sense of a truly American company in its artistic point of view and its welcoming spirit. At the same time, a program for young singers who were making a transition from academic to professional life, the Apprentice Program for Singers, was begun. As the first of its kind, it has served as a model for other training programs throughout the country. The program has served as a launching point for many prominent opera singers including Joyce DiDonato, Neil Shicoff, Samuel Ramey, James Morris, Brandon Jovanovich, Beth Clayton, Kate Lindsey, and Joyce El-Khoury. In 1965, an apprentice program for theater technicians was added, and it too has become an important training tool, launching the careers of many renowned designers and technicians.
