Festival: Istanbul Music Festival

Biography

May - June, 2018

Founded in 1973, the Istanbul music festival was initially focused only on classical music, but over the last 43 years it has gradually expanded to include film, theatre, jazz, dance and contemporary music. The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra has been the festival's resident orchestra since 2006.

Hosted by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and the Arts this prestigious annual event has played a major role in the establishment of classical music in Turkey. Highly acclaimed both nationally and internationally with a varied and creative programme of events, this festival creates opportunities for artists and musicians to share their inspiration and experiences with each other.

In addition to a wide range of concerts and cultural events, the Istanbul music festival also organises educational events, aiming to increase the public's appreciation of music and the arts. These pre-concert lectures offer the chance for people to meet the performers and hear from experts in the field. The festival also contributes to the education of future musicians and artists through a series of school visits, masterclasses, competitions and the presentation of achievement awards. The festival also commissions new works each year from globally renowned composers.

Each year the festival focuses on a different theme which runs through all the events.
