Festival: Staunton Music Festival

In the past 20 years, the Staunton Music Festival has emerged as one of the signature music events on the American East Coast. Described by Travel + Leisure as “Virginia’s world-class music festival,” SMF presents 30+ concerts of chamber music from the Renaissance to newly-commissioned works, by eminent vocalists and acclaimed instrumentalists from across the U.S. and Europe. Its signature series is an eclectic, ten-day August festival that draws 70+ musicians and audiences surpassing 7,000 for all events. Performances are in diverse venues from private homes to historic churches. Daytime concerts offer free admission, and youth are admitted for no charge to all events. For fans of contemporary music, SMF programs several dozen works from the 20th and 21st centuries, and acclaimed composers-in-residence appear each summer. And for fans of older music, all works written before 1850 are performed on authentic period instruments, including five harpsichords, three fortepianos, and two magnificent Taylor and Boody organs.

Nestled in the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley, Staunton, Virginia is called one of the best small cities in America by Smithsonian magazine. Rich in architectural history and modern performing arts, visitors can enjoy Elizabethan theater at the Blackfriars Playhouse (home to the American Shakespeare Center and the world’s only re-creation of the Bard’s indoor playhouse), tour the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Presidential Library, and stop for fabulous dining or shopping in the compact downtown. A short drive takes you to the Museum of American frontier culture and the natural charms of Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, part of America’s famed Appalachian Trail.
