I Suoni delle Dolomiti – Sounds of the Dolomites

The Dolomite Music Festival “I Suoni delle Dolomiti” celebrates its 23rd edition on a unique and unparalleled stage high up in the mountains, reached on foot by the audience and the performers, carrying their instruments in their knapsacks, and featuring a programme of performances ranging from classical music to jazz and world music.

Against an overwhelmingly beautiful backdrop made of rocks, grass, forests and wind,a backdrop that also forms an incredibly effective acoustic space, where the notes resound upwards and expand all around, taking on unusual hues and expressive inflections.

Among the mountain ranges defined by Le Corbusier as “the most beautiful natural architectures in the world” and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, the Festival performances take place in the early afternoon, but also at dawn, near the Alpine mountain huts: the mountain peaks, farmhouses and forests can be reached on foot, by both the audience and the performers, who carry up their own instruments. Then, high up in the mountains, after having shared this endeavour, the spectators gather around the musicians: there is no separation between spectators and performers, no purpose- built stage, no amplification, everybody experiences the event in exactly the same way, as an opportunity to exchange intimate, yet profound, emotions.

Playing in the mountains can be a challenge that the many international musicians taking part in the Festival “I Suoni delle Dolomiti” have tackled willingly, a one in a million artistic and human experience. And the audience too is one of the key players in these unique events that wonderfully fuse art, culture and tourism.

The tourists who flock to Trentino in the summer have the opportunity to combine relaxation, good food and music in a natural setting renowned the world over: the “I Suoni delle Dolomiti” concerts narrate these landscapes, inviting the spectators to escape from their everyday routine, to reflect and gain a new insight into and greater awareness of the world surrounding them. Music as a universal language, the mountains as a space of freedom: this is the foundation and guiding principle on which the Festival has been built, year after year, peak after peak, becoming one of the most highly anticipated events by the lovers of art and mountains together.

A mineral dialogue: Bach and the Dolomites

Picture a landscape as arid as it is austere, alternating between periods of bright sunshine and overcast skies carrying clouds from Veneto to the Austrian Alps. Mischa Maisky has taken up the challenge of playing two cello suites by Bach in these exceptional conditions.
