On demand: Walton's Symphony no. 1 in B minor

Bergen Philharmonic OrchestraRecorded at Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Norway

English composer Sir William Walton was painstakingly perfectionist, and his complete body of work across his long career is not large, but what we have is remarkable. The Symphony no. 1 in B flat minor is one of two symphonies he wrote. Walton struggled to complete it, to the point that its first public performance in 1934 was given without the finale. The complete four-movement work was then premiered the following year. Nonetheless, today this is among the best-known and loved symphonies by British composers.

Watch it as performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner.

Filmed in January 2017.
