On demand: Wagner's Faust overture

Bergen Philharmonic OrchestraRecorded at Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Norway

Many composers in the nineteenth century felt the magnetic pull of Goethe’s seminal play Faust. Richard Wagner was among them. He started an imposing symphony on the subject of fate and fortitude in Paris in 1839. But the symphony wasn’t to be, and instead became a powerful concert overture that tells of Faust’s longing and despair.

Watch this powerful piece as performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner.

Filmed in November 2017.
