Arvo Pärt - Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten

Igor Stravinsky - Funeral Song

Richard Strauss - Death and Transfiguration

No one likes to think about death, but it certainly has inspired some incredibly moving art. The pieces I have selected for this evening’s programme all approach death from different angle. Pärt’s almost inconsolably sorrowful canon expresses his regret for never having met Britten, a composer he greatly admired. Meanwhile Stravinsky’s doom-laden Funeral Song, lost for over a century and only re-discovered in 2016, was written to commemorate his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov. Finally, Strauss’s majestic tone poem Tod und Verklärung depicts a man’s transition from this world to the next, providing a rousing ending to the programme.
