Igor Stravinsky - Funeral Song

Richard Strauss - Death and Transfiguration

No one likes to think about death, but it certainly has inspired some incredibly moving art. The two pieces I have selected approach death from different angles. Stravinsky’s doom-laden Funeral Song, lost for over a century and only re-discovered in 2016, was written to commemorate his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, while Strauss’s majestic tone poem Tod und Verklärung depicts a man’s transition from this world to the next.
