On demand: Shostakovich's Violin Concerto no. 2

GSOplayRecorded at Gothenburg Concert Hall: Stora Salen, Gothenburg, Sweden

Shostakovich’s second violin concerto is undoubtedly one of the great masterpieces of the 20th century. Watch it in a thrilling performance by virtuoso Vadim Gluzman.

This concerto is a late work of Shostakovich’s, written in 1967 by a frail but experienced composer for his friend David Oistrakh. The span of expression is wide and inventive, often resulting in unexpected surprises, including duets between violin and horn and solo passages where the violinist wanders on its own before reuniting with the orchestra. It’s a captivating work, with serene melodies followed by outbursts and virtuoso passages: a formidable technical and musical challenge for a violinist. This does not deter Vadim Gluzman, which in this video shows why he is invited to perform with the finest orchestras and conductors in the world.

Filmed in September 2017.
