On demand: Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 5

KonserthusetPlayRecorded at Konserthuset Stockholm: Stora Salen, Stockholm, Sweden

Conductor Peter Oundjian and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra highlight the tenderness and majesty of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. This powerful music is loaded with romantic fervour.

Tchaikovsky clarified in notes associated with the first movement that the Fifth Symphony is about destiny. “A complete surrender to destiny, and also where destiny takes us, is unfathomable.” No one knows precisely what he wanted to say, but already in the first movement, he presents a clear motif of destiny in the clarinet, which then returns in various ways throughout each movement of the symphony.

Tchaikovsky fought a battle with the world around him throughout his life. He questioned expectations and how free it is possible to be in relationship to traditions. He also often experienced a sense of exclusion, but was quite clear in some respects: “I am passionately delighted with national elements in all their forms. I am Russian in the true meaning of the word.” We hear all the various components of the multifaceted composer Tchaikovsky in the Fifth Symphony.

Recording from October 2014
