What makes composers tick? And what are they trying to do? The answers, unsurprisingly, are as varied as contemporary music itself. That’s why we’ve decided to ask the same set of six questions to over a dozen contemporary composers – to get a sense of the amazing variety of styles, ideas, influences and (obviously) music that makes composition today as vital as we believe it is.
We have interviewed composers of various countries, genders and musical styles. Ages range from 15 to 81. One composer discusses his electric pencil sharpener. One says she listens to all styles of music apart from folk. Another quotes from Ecclesiastes. Stay tuned for more – we’ll be publishing interviews every Tuesday and Thursday throughout October.
