A Feast of Elgar

Since her Philharmonia debut in 2017, Elim Chan has cemented her place as a favourite with musicians and audiences alike. She is joined by Pablo Ferrández, a cellist with “pop-idol magnetism, superb technique and exhilarating musicality” (LA Times) in Elgar’s beloved Cello Concerto.

In contrast to the concerto’s profound beauty, the evening opens with Elgar’s cheerful portrayal of bustling Edwardian London. The composer himself described his overture as “stout and steaky... honest, healthy, humorous and strong”.

The Enigma Variations, Elgar’s tribute to his closest friends, crowns the programme. From the tender grace of the first variation, representing his beloved wife Alice, to the solemn grandeur of ‘Nimrod’, and other character sketches full of warmth and humour, this is the work that launched Elgar on the road to national treasure status.
