Together with artist in residence Janine Jansen and clarinettist Martin Fröst, the Concertgebouworkest is premiering a new double concerto by Sally Beamish. Works by Mendelssohn and Brahms flank this brand-new work.

Janine Jansen and Sally Beamish

The Dutch star violinist Janine Jansen is serving as the Concertgebouworkest’s artist in residence in the 2020–21 season. Together with clarinettist Martin Fröst and conductor Thomas Hengelbrock, she is premiering a new double concerto by Sally Beamish, a work commissioned by the Concertgebouworkest. Beamish is one of Britain’s most respected contemporary composers. She sees the solo concerto as a very inspiring genre, saying, ‘I get a thrill from working with other creative minds, especially minds from a different background from my own.’ Works by Mendelssohn and Brahms flank Beamish’s brand-new work.

Mendelssohn and Brahms

The concert opens with Felix Mendelssohn’s energetic Ruy Blas Overture. After the interval, the Concertgebouworkest is performing Johannes Brahms’s Third Symphony. Brahms’s friend, the influential music critic Eduard Hanslick, was impressed at the time by the successful new work and wrote, ‘Many music lovers may prefer the titanic force of the First, others the untroubled charm of the Second. But the Third strikes me as artistically the most perfect.’
