BBC Symphony Orchestra/Oramo, Music by Grieg, Strauss and Stravinsky

This programme promises an explosion of colour and character for all the family, from Strauss’s vaulting portrait of the Iothario Don Juan, Grieg’s heroic piano concerto to the spangled exoticism of Stravinsky’s fairy-tale ballet The Firebird. In between comes Sibelius’s brooding, atmospheric tone- poem En Saga, which he said contained ‘the whole of my youth’. He asked ‘ can one think of anything other than Finland while listening to it?’ The acclaimed young Spanish virtuoso Javier Perianes, described as ‘a poet at the keyboard’, joins Sakari Oramo in Grieg’s famous concerto.
