Britten’s piece was commissioned in 1941 for the album Homage to Paderewski, marking the 50th anniversary of the pianist/composer/politician’s American debut. Composed in 1824, and actually begun in the Hungarian town of Zseliz (now Želiezovce in Slovakia), Schubert’s sizable, three-movement Divertissement makes use of genuine local folk material. Holst made his own two-piano version of his famous suite in 1914-6, before the work’s orchestration was completed.
