Vaughan Williams, Ralph (1872-1958) | Symphony no. 5 in D major |
Orchestre de la Suisse Romande | |
Daniel Harding | Conductor |
Håkan Hardenberger | Trumpet |
Dedicated to this evenings great soloist,Håkan is the second concerto for trumpet by English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, written in 2014. The orchestra is composed of rare instruments including various gongs, temple bells, and harp strings. Between two exotic movements, the Arietta is a beautiful nocturn dominated by the nostalgic sounds of a trumpet soaring above the chords of the strings and a light percussion.
Without a doubt, Daniel Harding is one of the best ambassadors of Ralph Vaughan-Williams works, which are relatively unknown to French-speaking audiences. Composed in the midst of the war between 1938 and 1943, and dedicated to Jean Sibelius, the Symphony No. 5 is a great serene and luminous song of hope, bringing a little consolation after such tragic years.
