A few orchestral Champions League matches are coming up: But before we take creative shots on the goal in Spain, we look forward to our home game in front of our loyal Bamberg fan base. Our chief conductor will lead us as our musical coach through »premier league« works from his Czech homeland, among other things. He has shared his enthusiasm for this repertoire with us since 2016, and we love to revel in the special artistry of this region. First, we present a sparkling piece by Smetana from 1874: the overture to the opera »The Two Widows«, rarely performed today – an entertaining composition about two very different cousins and an unexpected visitor. Dvořák’s Fifth Symphony, written in 1875, leads a rather quiet existence compared to his other works – and completely wrongly so: it is characterised by atmospheric folklore and was once described as »a feast for the ears of musicians«. The solo concerto also promises to be a joy to play: alongside the exceptional artist Sol Gabetta, we will perform Elgar’s famous and highly emotional Cello Concerto from 1919. He composed it at a time marked by worry, illness and anxiety. For this reason, it is largely imbued with a heart-rending melancholy, but there are also a few rays of hope in this wonderful stream of music – with which we hope to delight our Bamberg audience before we set off on our tour of the Iberian Peninsula.

Tickets from 25.08.2025 10 a.m.
