This soup concert offers three tasteful pieces for various woodwind instruments and piano. Clara Schumann’s Romances for clarinet and piano are filled with melancholy, warmth and intensity. Originally composed for violin and piano, they were dedicated to the legendary violinist Joseph Joachim, with whom Clara frequently performed.
Exceptionally gifted British composer William Hurlstone died in 1906 at just thirty years old. By then, he had just been appointed professor at the Royal College of Music in London and had already composed several high-quality chamber works – including this life-affirming sonata for bassoon and piano.
Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for oboe and piano has become a central work in the oboe repertoire. Dedicated to fellow composer Sergei Prokofiev, it is filled with melancholy, elegance and playfulness. Poulenc died not long after completing the sonata, which became the final work he ever wrote.
