The award was founded in 1990 commemorating Yasushi Akutagawa the composer for his significant contribution to the development of Japan's music during the post-war period. This award is given to an up-and-coming Japanese composer whose orchestral composition is selected as the most fresh and promising from among those having premiered in Japan or abroad. This year enjoy the premiere performance of the newly commissioned work of the winning composer from 2021, Yu Kuwabara, who has composed a concerto for shakuhachi and shamisen.
